Principle 3.5.4 Terminal Degrees of Faculty

At least 25 percent of the discipline course hours in each major at the baccalaureate level are taught by faculty members holding the terminal degree—usually the earned doctorate—in the discipline, or the equivalent of the terminal degree.

Compliance Status

The University of Georgia is in compliance with this principle.

Narrative

The percentage of course hours in each major disciplinary area taught by faculty with a terminal or terminal-equivalent degree at the University of Georgia for the current academic year is above twenty-five percent.

Across all major discipline areas, as defined below, eighty-one percent of the credit hours are taught by instructors with the terminal doctorate or appropriate terminal masters-level degree. In many major discipline areas, one hundred percent of the discipline course hours are taught by faculty with a terminal or appropriate terminal masters-level degree; in most major discipline areas, the percentage is above seventy-five, as shown in the following table. [1]

Using the definitions below, this table was constructed in six stages:

  1. Identifying all upper-level discipline hour courses taught during the review period.
  2. Calculating the total credit hours generated in those courses during the review period.
  3. Identifying the instructors of record for each course and their corresponding percent responsibility for the course.
  4. Identifying the highest degree held by each instructor.
  5. Identifying all instructors whose highest degree is the terminal doctorate or appropriate terminal masters-level degree.
  6. Calculating the percentage of credit hours taught by those faculty members.

Definitions

For purposes of this calculation, discipline course hours in each major are organized by teaching department and defined as upper division courses (numbered in the 3000-5999 range) that can contribute to an undergraduate major. In most disciplines, the University of Georgia defines the terminal degree as a doctorate-level degree, which includes the PhD, EdD, JD, DVM, and PharmD, as appropriate. In addition, the following masters-level degrees are considered terminal in their respective disciplines:

  • MARCH, Master of Architecture
  • MFA, Master of Arts
  • MHP, Master of Historic Preservation
  • MLA, Master of Landscape Architecture
  • MRP, Master of Regional Planning
  • MSW, Master of Social Work
  • MVA, Master of Visual Art

Specific information about the degrees held by faculty teaching upper and lower division courses can be found in the University of Georgia Instructors Rosters on the secure SACS-ER website. [2]
